Approximately 1,000 cases have been registered worldwide out of more than 30 million women with breast implants (8 cases in Denmark since 1968). The disease is treated by removing the implant together with the entire capsule surrounding it. It is important that you seek medical attention if you develop swelling, lumps, enlarged lymph nodes, or anything else that cannot be explained by the expected course after surgery.<\/p><p>Breast Implant Illness (BII): Since the 1980s, many large studies have been conducted to investigate and document the safety of various breast implants on the market. Research is ongoing into possible links between breast implants and connective tissue diseases and symptoms such as fatigue and joint pain. There is no scientific evidence that breast implants cause connective tissue diseases or neurological disorders, but a small subgroup of women develop non-specific symptoms and experience improvement after removal of the implants and the surrounding capsule.<\/p><p>BII is used as a collective term for symptoms that some women relate to their implants. Many of the symptoms, such as chronic fatigue, hair loss, joint and muscle pain, and skin rashes, can, however, be caused by many different conditions and diseases, and it is important to undergo thorough examination to rule out other underlying causes of the symptoms. If other causes have been excluded, it may be relevant to remove the implants and the scar tissue capsule around them.
