Chronic disorder of fat distribution

At Sculpture, and with the practitioners around Kurhotel Skodsborg, we are able to guide you towards a holistic approach.

Lipedema is a disorder of fat distribution, where abnormal fat tissue accumulates—particularly on the legs, hips, and arms. It is often accompanied by tenderness, tightness, and a feeling of heaviness, and is frequently mistaken for ordinary overweight. The condition typically worsens over time, and many experience that exercise and diet have limited effect.

We have extensive experience in treating lipedema and offer personalised treatment plans based on the latest knowledge and your individual needs, with expertise in both surgical and non-surgical approaches to lipedema, including:

  • Diagnostic assessment
A thorough professional evaluation of symptoms and stage.
  • Conservative treatment
We can provide guidance on compression therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, and relevant exercise—always with respect for your body and boundaries.
  • Liposuction for lipedema
If appropriate, we offer surgical removal of diseased fat tissue. We use the latest gentle techniques, focusing on both functional and aesthetic outcomes.

How does lipedema differ from traditional liposuction?

Treatment of lipedema focuses on removing diseased fat tissue to reduce pain, heaviness, and functional limitations. Traditional liposuction is primarily cosmetic, aiming to change shape and volume, whereas lipedema treatment is a medical intervention for a chronic condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about the treatment.

What is the duration of the treatment?

The duration depends on the type of treatment chosen and the number of areas of the body to be treated.

• Surgical treatment (liposuction) typically lasts 3–6 hours, including preparation and recovery.

• Conservative treatment such as compression therapy and manual lymphatic drainage is carried out over a longer period and requires regular sessions.

Treatment of lipedema focuses on removing diseased fat tissue to reduce pain, heaviness, and functional limitations. Traditional liposuction primarily has a cosmetic purpose – to change shape and volume – whereas lipedema treatment is a medical treatment for a chronic condition.

  • People diagnosed with lipedema who experience significant discomfort in daily life

  • Patients for whom conservative treatment no longer provides sufficient relief

  • Individuals in generally good health, without medical contraindications

  • Patients with realistic expectations and the motivation to follow the aftercare process

Lipedema typically affects:

  • Thighs and lower legs

  • Hips and buttocks

  • Upper arms

  • In rarer cases, forearms

The treatment can be targeted at one or more areas depending on symptoms and stage.

  • Conservative treatment: Compression stockings, manual lymphatic drainage, gentle exercise, and, if necessary, pain management.

  • Surgical treatment (liposuction): Performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia. Small incisions are made, and the fatty tissue is removed using a gentle technique to protect the lymphatic system as much as possible.

  • Surgery: Light activity after a few days, but physically demanding activities should be avoided for 4–6 weeks. Swelling and bruising may last 4–12 weeks.
  • Conservative treatment: No actual recovery time, but requires continuous effort and adjustments in daily life.

Surgery can provide long-term symptom relief, but lipedema is a chronic condition, and symptoms may return over time. Conservative treatment relieves symptoms but does not remove the fatty tissue.

  • Surgery: Infection, bleeding, sensory disturbances, uneven skin, fluid accumulation, scarring, and the need for additional treatment.

  • Conservative treatment: Generally very low risk, but compression may cause skin irritation or discomfort if not fitted correctly.
